Over at ArchitecturalClassics, I discovered the World's most macabre chandelier! I’ll have to be honest, at first glance, I was just a tad freaked out that someone had actually made a chandelier out of human bones. I mean really, recycling is great but not like this!! Lol! After reading more about this unusual chandelier at ArchitecturalClassics' blog and looking at the photos more, I have come to realize that these creations made from human bones are really art. Really, they are! The chandelier itself, contains all the bones of the human body! To me, that is absolutely amazing!
So, I guess your wondering how this chandelier came into being and why.
In 1278, an abbot was sent to the Holy Land. Upon his return he brought back with him some soil from Golgotha (where Jesus was crucified) and sprinkled it on the ground of the cemetery. When people heard about this, they too wanted to be buried in that cemetery. The Black Plague and Hussite War brought many new bodies to the cemetery and soon there was no more room.
Around 1400, a Gothic church was built in the center of the cemetery to be used as an ossuary for all the bodies that were unearthed there. It has been said that after 1511, a half-blind monk was given the job of stacking all the exhumed bones.
Later, in 1870, a woodcarver was employed to put the bones in order. This man must have been incredibly creative because he took the bones and created four bell shaped heaps, this chandelier and several other pieces. Amazing!
This may sound strange, but now that I know the story behind this chandelier, I really do think it is a piece of art. It’s a testimony to our wonderful bodies that God has created. Even our bones are beautiful!
